One is when William and Sara, early in their relationship, improvise a breakup scene that proves prophetic. Webber doesn't have enough sand to pull off a lead, but he does well in a couple of memorable moments. Also, it might help if he would try looking beyond the New York boho scene - his first directorial effort, "Chelsea Walls," was an ensemble drama set in the same milieu. He's a talented guy - especially as an actor - but he's taken on too many jobs here, which may account for the movie's self-absorbed feeling. Besides Hawke, Laura Linney sparkles as William's mother, and there's a nicely astringent scene when Sonia Braga, as Sara's mom, tries to talk some sense to the young couple.īesides directing the picture and playing this small role, Hawke also wrote the script based on his own 1997 novel of the same title. It's odd that, while the film focuses on William's wallow in misery and Sara's inexplicable behavior, the most interesting figures are their briefly seen parents. Hawke himself plays the father, in one of the film's brighter spots. William's "you abandoned me" diatribe attempts to shift the blame for his problems with women on Dad's irresponsible ways. He gets more and more agitated, then abruptly takes off for Texas to confront his father. How this plays out is that William moons around, buys her a heart-shaped box of chocolates and hangs around in the street in front of her apartment, shouting lines from "Romeo and Juliet." No sale. This is a bigger surprise to William than it should be. When William gets back, she announces that she doesn't really want a boyfriend. The two take off for Mexico, where William has a part in an Alfonso Cuarón film. William is falling hard, but since Sara's character is so underwritten, it's hard to see why. Nevertheless, she soon moves into his apartment, though she won't immediately sleep with him. His attempts to be clever when he encounters her at a bar reveal his inexperience and ingrained clumsiness.
